Cattlemen in Pearls Captures and Celebrates Women in the Beef Industry

Cattlemen the world over, be they men or women, recognise and embrace the stock management and marketing skills of others.

And the book, Cattlemen in Pearls, started out as just an idea by Ian and Anne Galloway of Cootharaba Beef Genetics, to give public recognition to some of the unsung heroes of the bush – our women.

“We had a wonderful team of five authors, Annabelle Brayley, Tracey Hartmann, Paula Heelan, Claire Mactaggart, and Amanda Salisbury, all of whom are country women and took on their role with such enthusiasm,” Anne said.

Anne said they made a list of 28 cattle women, last November.

“We wanted to launch this book at the Ekka, and we didn’t want to give our authors a big workload,” she said.

“A lot of these women were people that Ian had grown up with, plus there are a lot of younger women coming through the ranks and we thought they needed to be acknowledge.

“All Ian and I really wanted, was for these stories to be documented, as they all are different and have vitally and we didn’t want these ladies lost in history.”

“Our niece Tracy Hartmann was one of the authors, and she did a brilliant job a the project manager, while Bev Ryan was the editor, and Elspeth Barker the graphic designer.”

“We wanted an abstract front cover, and it was painted by Roma artist Sandra Allen.”

Anne said the project has been a dream to work on, and the finished product is far more than they imagined.

“It is a beautiful book, and Ian an I have got so much satisfaction in knowing we have made some families very happy,” she said.

The book was launched by ABC Landline presenter Pip Courtney at the Ekka High Tea Charity Fundraiser. The fundraiser focuses on helping and educating rural youth, by raising funds to support the teaching and learning program of three western Queensland Schools of Distant Education; otherwise known as the Western Alliance.

The event also showcased an Ekka Fashion Parade, as well as traditional High Tea, Silent Auction and Raffle.

Galloways Triumph at EKKA

Ian & Anne Galloway, Galloway Cattle Co, Roma, had a team of three head for the stud judging at the recent EKKA 19, coming away with 3 blue ribbons and 2 Champions.

Their Brangus entries, Duarran Mombassa and Duarran Nockatunga were awarded Senior Champion and Reserve Senior Champion Brangus Bull respectively.

Mombassa, weighed in at 1048 kgs with an eye muscle area of 138 sq cm while Nockatunga was 802 kgs and an EMA of 124 sq cms at 21 months of age .

Their Hereford entry, Cootharaba Zed, won his class–14-16 month bull,and the judge said he had a great future ahead of him .

The Galloways have a great lineup of Red and Black Brangus bulls for private sale again this year, plus a line of rising 2 year old Hereford bulls. These cattle have all been running on limited oats .

Junior Champion male went on to take out the Grand Champion Hereford bull at the 2006 Brisbane Ekka.

Cootharaba Meteor (COOA103) , an eleven month calf out of a Cootharaba Prunella cow, won the 8-12month class. Sired by Monreid P Express (PRMX001) , he weighed 590 kgs and had an EMA of 103sq cms.

Cootharaba Beef Genes Wins Grand Champion Hereford Bull at Beef 06 in Rockhampton

New sire in use at Cootharaba Herefords, Glendan Park Yardman (FSAY045) won the highly contested Grand Champion Hereford Bull at Rocky Beef 06. Weighing 1182kgs and an eye muscle area of 135sq cms, he is very structurally correct, making a striking animal. Yardman was purchased in shares with Glenwarrah Herefords at Wodonga 05, where he won the Intermediate Championship.

Cootharaba Laredo (COOZ523) and Cootharaba Lemnos (COOA689) also won their classes, with Cootharaba Lemnos going on to be Reserve Calf Champion.

Cootharaba Beef Genes Wins Grand Champion Brangus Bull with Duarran Yalebone

Duarran Yalebone (IMG03RY744) , a 30 month old 1178 kg Red Brangus, with an eye muscle area of 131sq cm took out the Grand Champion bull award. Yalebone is sired by a home bred sire, Duarran Fantastic (IMG97FS670) , out of Greendale Ramify.

Following on from his great win, Yalebone was sold to the Hicks family of Billabong Droughtmasters, for a record price of $45,000 for half share and possession.

Cootharaba Magnum won the under 24 months class, where the judge praised him for his structure and carcase qualities. He weighed 984kg, giving him a daily gain of 1.59, fat depth of 8/11 and very good EMA of 133sq cm.

COOTHARABA MIDDLETON won 30 & under 42 month class because of his athleticism, length, muscle and beautiful skin type. He went on to be GRAND CHAMPION and stood up very well in the Inter Breed. With a weight of 1268 kgs, his EMA was 142 sq cm with fat scan of 10/18.

B144 COOTHARABA PAULINE 359 won the first Senior Class and went on to be SENIOR CHAMPION Hereford Female. By Monreid P Express, and 21 months, she was one of the winning team in the Sires Progeny Stakes.

DUARRAN BORAL is Lot 3 at Duarran Brangus Sale to be held at Paradise Lagoons, Rockhampton 19/9/08. At 22 months he weighed 816 kgs with an EMA of 124 sq cms and fat cover 6/8. He is sired by the great breeding bull , Duarran Yallambie.

Duarran Sizzler came a creditable 11th out of 48 in the led steer Class 7A 2008 Ekka.

Duarran brangus steers came 3rd and Cootharaba Hereford steers came 4th in the 2008 RNA 100 day weight gain trials held at Launcells Feedlot. The Cootharaba steers came 4th in the Taste Test.

Duarran Bambrick won the 24-30 month Class,then Senior Champion before becoming Grand Champion Brangus Bull. Weighing 1050 kgs and scanning an eye muscle area of 130sq cms he turned heads. Born 25/12/06. Sired by Duarran Zeuss out of Duarran Golly Y060 GRAND CHAMPION BEEF 09 - to follow on from DUARRAN YALEBONE at BEEF 06.

Cootharaba Pauline 359 followed on from her Senior Champion win in Brisbane in 2008 to take out the Senior and Grand Champion Hereford female at Beef 2009 with a smart little heifer calf at foot. Pauline is sired by Monried P Express out of Pauline 279, who is also mother of Cootharaba Magnum.

Cootharaba Pemberton won the 12-15 month Class before taking out the Calf Champion Hereford bull. He is a full brother to the Grand Champion Cow.

Cootharaba Ogilvie paraded in the 19-21 month class. He weighed 872 kgs with a fat scan of 12/7 and EMA of 119. He is impressive with great length.

Duarran Cessnock by Duarran Zorro was second in the 19-21 month class, the went on to be Reserve Junior Champion Brangus Bull.

Duarran Coochiemudlo weighing 934 kgs and scanning 122 EMA was impressive winning the 21-24 month Class. He is sired by Duarran Zeuss and out of a Duarran Cabana cow. Great length in all these cattle.

The Cootharaba Hereford team consisted of 2 bulls and 2 cows and became the Most Successful Exhibitor of the Hereford Breed.

Cootharaba Pauline 359 , with a super calf at foot, won the 30-48 month class before being awarded the Senior and GRAND CHAMPION COW honours.

Cootharaba Pemberton was second in the 18-20 month class and went on to be Reserve Junior Champion . He weighed 756 kgs and had an EMA of 123sq cms. SOLD - $11,000 to Hunday Herefords. Lot 1 Cootharaba Sale 9/9/09.

Cootharaba Pauline 362 won the 20-24 month class, and went on to win Reserve Senior Champion ribbon, beaten only by her stablemate.

C ootharaba Ogilvie won second ribbon and looked stunning in his 20-24 month class, weighing 1070kgs and an eye muscle area of 128sq cm. Cootharaba also won the Breeders Group, and the Sires Progeny Stakes with offspring of Monreid P Express.

DUARRAN BRANGUS showed only 3 bulls, two of whom were in the 16-20 month class. Duarran Cartwright won this class, went on to win Junior Champion Brangus bull, and then the top honours of GRAND CHAMPION BRANGUS BULL. 3rd place getters for weight gain in Class 37 - 100 day grain fed Paddock to Palate Competition, held at Launcells Feedlot, Drillham, Qld. Our Hereford steers gained 2.52 kgs/day.

Duarran Coochiemudlo , who weighed 1092 kgs and an eye muscle area of 132, came second in his class, and then went on to win the Reserve Senior Champion Bull.

He is for sale as LOT 2 at the RED BRANGUS CLASSIC sale to be held at Gracemere Selling Centre on Tuesday 29th September at 10 am .

The Galloways also entered a pen of Hereford and a pen of Brangus steers in the 100 day fed Paddock to Palate competition as part of the Ekka. Whiteface cattle came 1st, 2nd,3rd and 4th in the weight gain, with the Cootharaba steers being the 3rd Prize winners.

All in all, a great show for the Galloways.

For those who braved the 43 degree heat for the Duarran November 09 sale, there was some wonderful shopping to be done. We are so grateful to our valued supporters.

Top priced Brangus, Duarran Cartwright has gone to a new home at Julia Creek with the Curr family for $10,000. They also took home Duarran Dandenong, and a Red angus bull Duarran Charlton.

Top priced Red Angus, Duarran Chappell has gone to the McGill family at Kilkivan for $7500.

The truly wonderful team from Dunkeld ICPA branch kept the crowd fed and watered for the day - even cooking steaks in that unbearable heat.

They won 2 firsts and a second ribbon, J unior and Grand Champion and Reserve Junior Champion for Marwarra hfds. These three sons sold for an average of $22,000 - on of them topping the sale at $40,000.

COOTHARABA HEREFORD SALE was held Wed 8/9/10 with perfect weather and green grass in the paddocks - a huge contrast to to the last few years. 51/52 bulls sold with a top price of $9500 and an average of $4125. Repeat buyers were a feature of the day - their loyalty well appreciated. Top price bull was bought by the Warrian family from Injune.

Duarran Sale 2010

In contrast to the ultra-hot, droughty sale day in 09, the Duarran sale 2010 was held on a perfect spring day with green grass everywhere. Bulls went to McKinlay in the north, Nebo and Kenilworth towards the coast and St George in the south. A good number of bulls went locally.

A spirited sale saw a total clearance of all breeds (80 bulls - Red & BLack Brangus, Red Angus, Red Brahman and Bonsmara), with many return buyers and a sprinkling of new.

Brisbane Junior Champion Brangus bull Duarran Eddie by Doonside Eddie made top price of $13,000 and was purchased by Gavin McKenzie for his Tannyfoil Stud. He weighed 904 kgs at 21months with an EMA of 129 sq cms.

The 43 Red Brangus Bulls averaged $4500. The volume buyer of the day was Andromeda Cattle Co who purchased seven bulls for a $5287 average, Other bulk buyers were Strathfield Past Co from McKinlay who took 6 for a $4000 average, Revilo Pastoral 6 to average $3833 and the Pedersen Family who selected 5 for $4800 average.

The 22 Red Angus bulls sold to average $4000 with the top price of $12,000 being paid by the Gilmore family of Kenilworth for a son of Leader Toll Collector.

Eight Black Brangus sold to a top of $5500 to average just under $4000, with over half of them being locally purchased, 3 of them by the Lister family.

Two Red Brahman averaged $4500.

For the first time at auction we offered 5 Bonsmara Bulls - they sold to a top of $7500 and averaged $4800. The top price bull was a 968 kg son of Op - Die - Aarde VV01-233 who had an EMA of 137sq cm, and was purchased by Watonga Grazing.

Magnum Magnificent Again in 2011

Glendan Park Empire - $62,000 son bought in partnership with Yarram Park Herefords.

The impact of Cootharaba Magnum, a Hereford bull bred by Ian & Anne Galloway of Duarran, Roma, was enormous again at this years National Hereford Show and Sale at Wodonga this month. Magnum was sold at the Cootharaba on property sale to Glendan Park Herefords and Mawarra Herefords in Victoria for $42,000 in 2007. With 10 out of the 140 bulls sired by Magnum, show day was his.

Magnum's progeny stood out in every class they entered and this was borne out with the results. Junior, Intermediate, Reserve Intermediate, Senior, Grand and Reserve Grand Champions were all sons of this magnificent sire.

Sale day found these bulls in great demand for their carcase quality and figures, style, weight for age and overall appeal. A top price of $70,000 for a 24 month old son, is the highest price ever paid at the Wodonga complex.

The second top price was $62,000 paid for a 27 month son. The top 7 priced bulls were all by Cootharaba Magnum - the 10 sons of his sold for an average of $27,600.

Cootharaba Hereford Sale - 14/9/11

Cootharaba Hereford Sale was held on Wed 14/9/11 at Duarran. On a perfect spring day 45 Hereford and Poll Herefords sold to average $5000. The top price bull, Lot 3, Cootharaba Promo - another outstanding son of Monreid P Express, was bought by the Oprhant Family from Gunalda for $12,000 for their Westbank Stud. They also paid $10,000 for Cootharaba Quambatook - sired by Cootharaba Middleton.

Second top price of $11,000 was paid by Autumnvale, Injune for a Charvel Benefit son with great growth and carcase.

Ardrossan secured the bull of their choice, paying $9000 for another super son of Cootharaba Middleton.

Many return buyers took bulls to Taroom, Goondiwindi, St George, Injune, Eidsvold and south to Wauchope.

RED ANGUS Reserve Senior Champion Bull 2011 Royal Queensland Show - the very stylish.

Duarran Esperance being led by Shelly. At the same time the Brangus were being judged in a nearby ring, looking beautiful and picking up minor ribbons.

Offspring of Cootharaba Hereford bulls continue to do well.

- At Glenwarrah Hereford sale, sons of Cootharaba Middleton made the two top prices at $17,000 and $9000.
- At Amos Vale Hereford sale equal top priced bull was a son of Cootharaba Meteor at $7000.
- Junior Champion Hereford Heifer at 2011 Ekka was Lotus Maritana sired by Cootharaba Ogilvie .

26/7/11 Final Weigh -in for RNA Class 37 was held at Launcells Feedlot. Galloway Cattle Co was placed in a tie for third. The pen of Hereford and Hereford Cross steers gained a creditable 2.24 kgs per day for 100 days. Here Ian and David being presented with the ribbon with RNA President Allan Warby and a representative from Performance Feeds.

Thursday 21st July was OPEN DAY 2011 at Duarran. The sale bulls - Herefords and Poll Herefords, Red & Black Brangus and Red Angus were on display, along with the show team. A delicious BBQ lunch was shared with visitors, some of whom were from as far away as Victoria.

Duarran Brangus / Red Angus Sale - 19/10/2011

Duarran Brangus / Red Angus sale held at Duarran on Oct 19th 2011, proved the worth of selling all bulls at our own sale. With a 95% clearance the average for the entire sale was $4008.

The Red Brangus topped twice at $12,000 - these bulls going to Don & Kay Gordon at Alpha, the other to Samari Plains at Roma. These were sons of Duarran Zeuss and Doonside Benny respectively, and showed great temperament and performance. Jay Tee Bee Brangus paid $9000 for a son of Duarran Beresford, a calf with wonderful muscling weighing 860kgs at 23 months and an EMA of 141 Sq cm. Redline Brangus chose an $8500 deep bodied son of Duarran Bicheno who showed great style and fertility.

85 Red Brangus sold to average $4250 and went from Katherine in the Territory and Julia Creek in the north to all parts of Qld. Our repeat and bulk buyers are much appreciated, as are the under bidders.

33 Red Angus sold to a top of $7500 to average $3575. El Paso was bought by WH Kettle & Co who selected four super bulls to average $6125. Hubbard Past chose Res Snr Champ from Brisbane for $7000 to use over mainly droughtmaster cows.

The Pedersen family returned again to select a great draft of 4 bulls to average $5000. Pancho Beef from the NT chose well to acquire a draft of 14 bulls to average just over $3000, while Webb Cattle Co selected 9 to average $2666. Douglas Cattle Co bought a selection of 5 bulls for an average of $3100.

4 Bonsmaras averaged $3875 with two going to far north west NSW and two staying locally at Mitchell.

Preparations are well under way now for Beef 2012 to be held in Rockhampton 6th to 12th May 2012. Our cattle will be on display in the Brangus Boulevard at Sites 173 & 175. A this Beef the Brangus World Congress will be taking place where we are expecting a considerable International contingent.

Wandoan Brangus Feature Show 16/17th April 2012

Duarran cattle performed splendidly at the Wandoan Brangus Feature Show 16/17th April 2012, where there was a great turnout of fifty Brangus.

Duarran Rosie with her spiffing bull calf Gatsby, came second in the 24-30 month class.

In the Junior Bulls, Duarran Geebung, Frankston and Flinders (14 bulls in this class) all won their classes with Duarran Flinders winning Junior Champion.

Duarran Edgewater looked sirey as he went out to win 24-30 month class, and then went on to win Senior and Grand Champion Brangus Bull.

With Senior and Grand Champion bull and Duarran Rosie, Duarran won the coveted Breeders Group trophy.

Duarran Meatball, a Brangus X Hereford steer was awarded the Grand Champion Steer prize also, weighing in at 500kgs.

Ian was asked to open the Wandoan Show, as this is the year of the World Brangus Congress, so he was able to give this function a good plug.

National Show and Sale at Wodonga

Cootharaba Magnum continues his dominance of the Australian Hereford world again in 2012 at the National Show and Sale at Wodonga in early May. A Magnum son Marwarra Yesteryear won Junior & Reserve Grand Champion Hereford bull and later sold for $30,000 to Ironbark.

Senior Champion Hereford Bull was Glendan Park Federation - sired by Cootharaba Magnum, who sold for $30,000 to Glenwarrah Hfds , who then sold shares to South Boorook and to Richon, Hfds, New Zealand.

Reserve Senior Bull was another Magnum son and he sold to Injemira Herefords for $26,000.

Bolong Herefords also sold a Magnum son. He made $25,000 and was purchased by the Bjorksten family.

Beef 12 Success

Beef 12 was a huge success at Rockhampton where the World Brangus Congress also took place.

The Duarran show team and Duarran/Cootharaba site were well visited by people from all over the world. Duarran Flinders and Duarran Edgewater were much admired members of the team, along with Duarran Geebung and Duarran Geneva. Duarran Rosie and her smart calf Gatsby were also eye catchers.

Our team of 10 Brangus went home with 9 ribbons, and our two Cootharaba Hereford entries, Rowland and Stirling both won reds.

Ekka 2012

Showing at Brisbane RNA since 1928, the Galloway family have continued their success in August 2012. With a team of Brangus cattle - 5 bulls and a cow and calf, they came away with - Senior Champion Brangus cow, Duarran Rosie with Gatsby at foot.

Duarran Gisborne was 3rd in 16-20 month class - he's looking good.

Duarran Geebung won the 18-20 month class.

In 20-24 month class Duarran Frankston came first and Duarran Flinders second.

Both Junior and Reserve Juniour Brangus Bulls were sired by Duarran bulls.

A pen of 6 Duarran Brangus X Steers entered in the Class 37- 100 day fed Paddock to Palate competition also did well, gaining a 5th in the weight gain section and 4th overall for the Sturrock Trophy - with a record 54 pens entered.

This year was the inaugural Sturrock Trophy, so named to honour the work Duncan has put in over the past 15 years feeding the cattle for this competition. It encompasses the four sections of the competition - weight gain, carcase evaluation, MSA eating quality and taste test.

A pen of Cootharaba Hereford X steers came in the top 25% also.

Cootharaba Hereford Sale - 12th Sept 2012

Repeat buyers were the strong bidders at Cootharaba Hereford sale on Wed 12th Sept 2012. The top priced bull went locally to Injune repeat buyers, the Warrian family. The second top price was paid by David Phelan from Yarram, Victoria.

Other bulls went to Kyogle and West Wyalong in New South Wales, as well as many local spots.

52 bulls sold to average nearly $4200 with a 90% clearance.

Duarran Sale - Sept 27th

Bidding began briskly at the Duarran sale on Sept 27th with the first two bulls Edgewater and Flinders both making $16,000 and going to loyal return buyers Duff Brangus and Tannyfoil Brangus. Tannyfoil took another two, higher percentage bulls, Geneva and Geebung at $12,500 and $13,000. Volume buyers were Abbieglassie from Mitchell, Brinard from Julia Creek, the Hick and Seymour families from Mt Isa and the Kettle family from Capella.

Great supporters the Glover family from Tambo paid $7500 for the top priced Red angus bull. He will go over red Brahman cows.

Repeat and new buyers were welcome and we wish them well with their purchases. A great thanks to buyers and underbidders.

The 65 bulls sold averaged $5172 with an 85% clearance.

Hereford World Progeny of Cootharaba Bulls Continues to Do Well

In the Hereford world progeny of Cootharaba bulls continue to do well. Lotus Gascoyne, pictured below, and sired by Cootharaba Ogilvie , won Supreme Hereford Exhibit at Sydney Royal 2013 .

Ogilvie sons were top price at Strathleigh in 2012 at $20,000, and at Tummel 2013 at $12,000.

Cootharaba Mendez continues to breed muscle and type at Truro and Talbalba.

Cootharaba Middleton - the carcase bull, sired top price at Glenwarrah in 2011 and 2012.

Cootharaba Magnum and his sons continue to produce high quality cattle that are sought after everywhere and have dominated the show and sale ring at Wodonga 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.....

Our pen of Hereford steers in the RNA 100 day Paddock to Palate Feedlot trial in 2013 came 8th out of 70 pens across all breeds for the weight gain at a very creditable 2.66 kgs/day .

Brisbane Ekka 2013

Brisbane Ekka was a great day out for Duarran Brangus. 10 month old Horatio, a son of Duarran Zorro started the day by winning Reserve Junior Brangus Bull .

In the 20 to 24 month class, Duarran Groves, a 752 kgs son of Tannyfoil Callum and Eye Muscle Area of 118, beat his stable mate Duarran Genoa (726 kgs EMA 116) by Duarran Bicheno to come first and second in the class. Groves then went on to win Reserve Senior Champion Brangus Bull .

In the 24 to 30 month Class, Duarran Gisborne, son of Beef 09 Grand Champion Duarran Bambrick,stood proudly, weighing 1090kgs and EMA 134 and winning a first place. He then went on to be named Senior and GRAND CHAMPION Brangus Bull .

44th Cootharaba Hereford Sale

Hot, windy and dry conditions prevailed for the 44th Cootharaba Hereford sale. Many repeat buyers were amongst those present . A 75% clearance averaged almost $4800 with a top price of $8500 for Lot 24 going to the Staines family.

Duarran Sale - Sept 2013

The Duarran sale day was one of the hottest September days on record as well as blowing a strong wind all day. Despite that, a small gallery bid well to give a nearly 70% clearance with a top of $14,000 for Lot 6, a growthy 29 month old son of Summer Wages who weighed 1008kgs, had an EMA of 140 and was bought by the Hick family of North West Qld. They also secured Ekka grand Champion Duarran Gisborne for $8000.

The Red Brangus averaged $4552, the Black Brangus $3333 with a top of $5000 and the Red Angus averaged $4700 with a top of $8500.

Top priced RA Lot 91 was a 1015kg 27 month son of Duarran Beauchamp who had an EMA of 143 sq cms and he was purchased by the Williams family from Nebo.

Dry Weather

The incredible dry continues to ravage a good deal of Qld, and here at Roma is no exception. Great to hear of the monsoon influence in the north so lets hope it soon comes south.

Duarran Brangus will have 10 bulls in Rocky for the All Breeds sale selling late on day one - Tuesday 18th Feb. Blacks Lots 327 to 330 and Reds 340 to 345.

Miraculously some much needed rain fell on our home place, starting while Ian was in Rockhampton at the All Breeds Sale. Hopefully the huge gaps will fill in quickly. At the All Breeds sale, Duarran Brangus had a full clearance of 9/9 Red and Black bulls averaging just under $4000. A big thank you to buyers and underbidders.

100 Day RNA Palate to Plate Weight Gain Final

The final weigh-in for the prestigious RNA Paddock to Palate competition was held at Mort & Co’s Grassdale Feedlot on Tuesday 24/6/14.

This year the competition was fierce with 33 pens of all breeds and crosses. The top 11 pens were separated by only 170 gms for the overall ADG (Average daily gain).

An entry of Hereford /Brangus steers owned by Galloway Cattle Co , took out 3rd place with an overall ADG of 3.196kgs. with the top two results being 3.206 and 3.199kgs…………………..oooh so close!

The next 3 steps for the competition are Carcass, MSA Eating Quality, and the Beef Taste Off.

Duarran Brangus Shine at Ekka 14

With a team of 5 Brangus and 2 Hereford bulls, Ian & Anne Galloway headed for the Brisbane show early this month – 86 years after the first Galloway team headed for the Ekka on a long journey by bullock wagon and train.

While the Herefords were by no means disgraced, they were both placed third in their respective classes.

In the Brangus ring, under the astute eye of David Bondfield it was different story.

Duarran Haystack and Halifax were placed 1st and 2nd in the 18/20 month Class, with Haystack – who weighed 866kgs with an eye muscle area (EMA) of 127 sq cms, was later awarded Junior Champion.

In the Senior bulls, Duarran Havelock and Hastings competed against each other in 20/24 month class with Duarran Havelock taking 1st, and Hastings 2nd in he largest class of the Brangus judging.

The final Senior Bull class 30/42 months was won by Duarran Genoa – a 34 month son of Duarran Bicheno who weighed 1070kgs with an EMA of 140.

Duarran Havelock , who weighed in at 886 kgs at 21 months with an EMA of 128, was then selected as Senior Champion. The dual for Grand Champion was fought out by two Duarran bulls, the younger bull Duarran Haystack taking judges eye and the honours.

Duarran bloodlines were evident throughout the showing, with the grand Champion Brangus Cow, Duff Red Garnet being sired by Duarran Zadar. She has a beautiful calf by Duarran Edgewater who was senior and grand Champion in Brisbane in 2012.

Duarran Brangus Sale 2014

A small but active crowd braved the storm clouds for the 18th Duarran Brangus Sale held on property at Roma, Queensland. A mere 6 mls fell half an hour before the sale, settling the dust and with sun again shining by start time of 12noon.

Royal Queensland Show Grand Champion Brangus bull Lot 3 Duarran Haystack by Doonside Summer Wages - was star of the day, topping the sale at $22,000. He was purchased by Semex with a view to marketing semen around the world. Haystack will reside in Victoria. At 20 months of age he weighed 964 kgs, an EMA of 130 and fat scans of 16/10.

Close behind was Lot 5 Duarran Halifax, another son of Summer Wages. Also 20 months and weighing 940 kgs with an EMA of sq cms 127, the bidding quickly rose to $20,000 and was taken home by the Dingle family of Eidsvold for their Redline Brangus Stud.

Lot 4, Duarran Hastings, a stylish 22 month son of Duarran Eromanga was purchased for $15,000 by John & Nerida Allen and family for their Mawson Brangus Stud. Hastings weighed in at 1002 kgs, EMA 138 and fat scan of 15/9.

Once again repeat buyers selected lines of bulls, along with some new buyers, taking the cattle west to the Pilbara in WA, north to Cloncurry and Ingham, some locally, east to Beerwah, and places in between. We sincerely thank all bidders and wish those who were successful, great calves. Don't forget we always have bulls and females for private sale.

With an 80% clearance, the Red Brangus averaged $5880, Black Brangus av $4833, and the Red Angus averaged $3500.

Continuing an unbroken record of attendance at every Beef, Galloway Cattle Co had a display stand and a show team of Brangus and Herefords in 2015. Situated 'over the road' in cattle Cattle Alley. There we caught up with many clients, friends and family, and met many new people as well.

Tuesday was Hereford Judging day and under the watchful eye of Reade Radel, Cootharaba did well. Our young bull Cootharaba Underwood, weighing 848kgs, EMA 111 and fat coverage of 10/7, won the 15-17 month Class.

Underwood is out of Beef 06 Champion Hereford Cow Pauline B144 and sired by Glendan Park Empire. Empires father is the notable Cootharaba Magnum, a bull who has done a lot for the Hereford breed.

In the 28-30 month class, Underwood's full brother, Cootharaba Uluru came first with Cootharaba Usher second to him.

Uluru weighed 1138 kgs, EMA 130 and fat of 20/12. Usher is also sired by Glendan Park Empire, weighed 1054kgs, EMA 128 and fat cover 11/8.

Wednesday was Brangus judging, where Renee Rutherford had the job of sorting out nearly 200 head.

Duarran Kapaldo and Kalumbaru came 2nd & 3rd in their classes, then Duarran Xmas and Fancy came 1st and 2nd in the 17-19 female Class.

Duarran Jamberoo won the 21-24 Class, then along came HAVELOCK. He won his class - 24 and under 30months, the Senior Champion and GRAND CHAMPION.

Havelock weighed 1214 kgs, an EMA of 140 with fat cover of 19/10.. He looked so athletic and healthy, and went on to be 3rd in the INTERBREED on Thursday.

Ekka 2015

With a team of 2 Hereford Bulls, 5 Brangus Bulls and 2 Brangus females we were kept busy at the Ekka this year.

DUARRAN JABIRU , the 2nd youngest member of our team and a red brangus, won the 18-20 month Class weighing 710 kg, a fat score of 7 and 10 and Eye muscle area of 121 square cms. He then went on to be awarded JUNIOR CHAMPION BRANGUS BULL. He sells as Lot 2 at Duarran Brangus sale Thursday 24th September 2015 .

In the first senior class - 20-24 mths, DUARRAN JARMAN, our only black entry to the show, was impressive, winning his class. Weighing 800 kgs, fat score of 20/12, he had an eye muscle area of 122 sq cm. JARMAN went on to be awarded RESERVE SENIOR CHAMPION BRANGUS BULL . He sells as LoT 4 at the Duarran sale.

These two bulls then won the PAIR OF BULLS class .

Cootharaba Sale 15

The Cootharaba Hereford sale topped at $30,000 at the 46th annual sale on property at Roma last Thursday. The 31 month old son of Glendan Park Empire is from the champion award winning Cootharaba Pauline family. He was purchased by the Compton Herefords - a very happy repeat buyer.

Uluru weighed 1215kg with an eye muscle area of 142 sq cms, fat scans of 26/14 mm and scrotal circumference of 46cms.

Three bulls sold for $10,000 - Lot 1 was a son of Devon Court Haymaker from the Cootharaba Day Dawn family, and he was purchased by commercial producers Hartnell & Connolly.

Tom & Robyn Nixon from Devon Court Herefords selected Lot 7 for $10,000. Cootharaba Ultimo he is by Glendan Park Empire out of the grand old Pauline 279.

Also commercial producers, Russel and Amanda Hay from Taroom, paid $10,000 for Lot 12, another robust son of Glendan Park Empire. The Hay family took home 3 bulls.

Mark Bath from NSW chose a big upstanding son of Centennial Firestorm in Lot 5 for $8000. Urangan weighed 926 kgs at 22 months and had an Eye Muscle Area of 124 and a high Intramuscular Fat reading of 7.4.

The Southern family from St George took three bulls , along with repeat buyers Ian Hoch, Warwick and Sophie Cooper and Christine and Cathy Gall.

Stud principal Ian Galloway said he was very pleased to have the support of long term clients and some new ones as well.

With an 80% clearance and top of $30,000, the sale averaged $5469.

Duarran Brangus Sale 2016

The Duarran Bull sale for 2016 will be held on property at Duarran, Roma on Thursday 22nd SEPTEMBER starting at 12 noon.

There will be about 60 Red Brangus and 10 Black Brangus bulls. Heading the sale will be Duarran Kapaldo, a Summer Wages son who is also off to the Ekka in August.

This year at our bull sale we are offering 30 Red Brangus heifers, mated to sires from the Duarran battery. Well worth a look!

Duarran Brangus Sale 2015

The Duarran Sale topped at $18,000 with the sale of Lot 7, DUARRAN JUMBALAYA to Western Australia's Munda Pastoral. The repeat buyers spotted the bull at a visit earlier in the month. At 22 months of age Jumbalaya weighed 868kg, an EMA of 123 sq cms and fat coverage of 11/9.

The sale started strongly with the first six lots averaging over $10,000. Lot 1, Duarran Jamberoo sold for $11,000 to Gindi Past Co of NSW, and Lot 5, Duarran Jaffa was also purchased for $11,000 by long time client Gavin McKenzie of Tannyfoill Brangus.

The Kettle family bought 2 to average $9500 while Kylie and Gary Maguire from Dingo selected wisely and took 3 bulls to average $7333.

Many bulls went locally and to repeat buyers - Strathfield at McKinlay took 7, as did the Whatmore family from Morven.

The Red Brangus averaged $5615, and the Black Brangus averaged $4300 with a sale average of $5260.

Cootharaba Hereford Happenings for 2106

7/9/16 COOTHARABA VAUCLUSE - the Grand Champion Hereford bull from the Royal Queensland Show, has been sold to Glenlyon Rural Holdings for Phil & Lyle Yantsch for $30,000.

The Yantsch family also chose some Cootharaba females to join their herd. We wish them well with their purchases.

Due to unexpected demand from our clients who had rain earlier this year, we have sold out of Hereford bulls for the moment.

Paddock sales will continue and we will be back on the sale circuit on 2017.

Cootharaba Vaucluse was our only Hereford entry at the Ekka 16 this week and he did us proud by taking out the Senior and Grand Champion Hereford bull awards.

We have purchased an exciting new sire battery this year at Wodonga, so look forward to some new genetics arriving next spring.

These bulls are a mixture of polled and horned genes and hopefully will do very well. The youngest of these was Avignon Red Cloud (by Domino 988W), a young impressive horned bull out of a Monreid Dewdrop cow.

Red Cloud was a first prize winner at Wodonga National Show and Sale this year.

Overlooked in his class was Kaludah Gibbon, a scurred bull by Allendale Waterhouse(P). He was not overlooked by astute cattlemen, and we were forced to pay well !! He will do a great job here.

The horned bull RH Klassic by Charnock Jackall took our eye - and the judges. He won his class and went on to be awarded Reserve Senior Champion. He has great carcase figures and is out of a RH Cowboy Victoria cow.

The final bull is Wanrua Kingsland, a pure polled son of Wanrua Goldfinger out of Studbrook Maratana. An exceptionally long bull, he weighed 1118 kgs at 25 months, with great carcase figures also.

We eagerly await offspring from these bulls.

Brisbane Ekka 16

It was a big week for Cootharaba Beef Genes at the Ekka this week. With a team of 6 Brangus bulls, Duarran Laredo a 14 month old son of Duarran Genoa, won his class and followed up with Junior Champion Brangus Bull.

Duarran Jarman, a 32 month old son of Spin Doctor, looked stunning as he won his class and went on to take out Reserve Senior Champion Brangus Bull.

Duarran later won the much contested PAIR of Bulls.

The following day was Hereford judging, and with one lone entry, Cootharaba Vaucluse, we were delighted to take out the Grand Champion award. This is 88 years after Cootharaba showed their first team at the EKKA.

Just look at that trophy!

2017 Happenings

Right now we are at the EKKA 2017 in Brisbane (Royal Queensland Show) where we were awarded the RESERVE CHAMPION CARCASS in the 100 day fed Class 37 competition held at Grassdale Feedlot. This steer was Hereford Brangus cross and one of nearly 600 in his class.

In the BRANGUS show ring, our 7 head won 13 ribbons. Included in those were wins of SENIOR CHAMPION and RESERVE SENIOR CHAMPION BULL, Pair of bulls, BREEDERS GROUP, and SIRES PROGENY. Duarran Genoa was the sire represented in he sires progeny class, making a powerful team of carcass cattle.

The SENIOR CHAMP, DUARRAN LATEMORE, will be in our Sept 21st on property sale 2017.

The RES SENIOR DUARRAN LAREDO will become one our sires.

In the HEREFORD ring, our lone entry looked a million dollars coming home with a second prize.

Here we are after a few months of no action on the web - a very busy year is my lame excuse!

There is much going on at Cootharaba beef genes - the cattle are doing well.

As we have been testing our herd for Johnes disease for the last few years, and attended to the paperwork, our status in 2017 is JBas 7 .

We have sold our Bonsmara herd with just a few heifers remaining. That leaves us with our two main breeds of Brangus - Red and Black, and Herefords.

We sold Rossmore near St George, earlier in the year, which has reduced the hours spent driving to and fro. We loved the property and enjoyed our 3 years of ownership. The new owners have great plans and much enthusiasm and we wish them every success.

We are currently getting our team of 8 Duarran Brangus and 1 Cootharaba Hereford ready for Brisbane Show (Ekka).

Two teams of steers went to Grassdale Feedlot for the Class 37 (100 day export) and Class 38 (70 day local trade) feedback trials, and the final of that will be at the Ekka in August.

Bull sale season for us starts off with 9 BLACK BRANGUS BULLS for the Roma Brangus Sale on Friday 1st September 2017 .

COOTHARABA HEREFORD SALE is on-property at DUARRAN, ROMA on Wednesday 6th September where there will be 45 Hereford/Poll Hereford Bulls.

DUARRAN BRANGUS SALE is on property at DUARRAN, ROMA on Thursday 21st September starting at 12 noon. There will be 50 Red Brangus bulls and 30 Red Brangus heifers on offer - a great opportunity to buy quality breeders.

In May we were lucky enough to go on Safari in Kenya - a wonderful experience. We came across a local cattle sale one day and were fascinated to see the very different approach to cattle selling.

We also were at Ol Pejeta - a game park and cattle operation, the day the classification of the Boran cattle was taking place. This created much discussion between all the cattle people present. The animal /manpower ratio in Kenya is much higher than we know it - many more differences as well.

It was amazing to see the herd of Ankole cattle, whose greatest asset is their horns. One of the cows we saw had a horn tip span greater than the length of her body.

2018 has been a full year already and we are only just past the halfway mark. Our first big event was Anne's mother's 99th birthday in early February, and was a happy and festive family affair.

Late February we were lucky enough to go to Houston Stock Show and World Brangus Congress in Texas USA , where a good number of Aussies joined others from many countries. We were treated to some wonderful hospitality and great cattle.

In March we sold our last Mitchell country as our downsizing continues. This will eventually allow us to slow down, but so far the pace continues. THIS YEAR WE WON'T BE HAVING ON PROPERTY SALES, BUT WILL BE SELLING HEREFORD AND BRANGUS (RED ANd BLACK) BULLS AND FEMALES PRIVATELY FROM THE PADDOCK.

BEEF 18 was a big event on the calendar. We had our own site with Brangus and Herefords on display and in the Stud Cattle Judging. COOTHARABA XPLICIT won his class, Senior Champion and went on to be crowned Grand Champion Hereford. He is now for sale, and will be in Brisbane August 9th and 10th for the EKKA , along with Cootharaba Plowman and a team of 5 Red Brangus. All of these are for private sale.

July was the end of the RNA Paddock to Palate Feedlot weight gain trials held at Mort & Co feedlot Jondaryan. Our Pen of 6 Hereford/Brangus X steers in Class 37 100 day Export came 3rd with an average daily gain of 3.069kgs. An individual 3rd went to one of these steers for an ADG of 3.408kgs/day.

In Class 38 - 70 day Trade our pen of 6 came 5th, but one team member won a 3rd place for an ADG of 3.25kgs/day. This pen was also Hereford Brangus X.

Added to the cattle business this year, Ian had the inspiration to gather stories of SOME of the wonderful and amazing cattlemen out there who are women. This has led us on a challenging, rewarding, EDUCATIONAL and immensely enjoyable path that has culminated in the production of a truly beautiful coffee table book ' CATTLEMEN IN PEARLS '.

This book will be launched at the RNA High Tea on Thursday 9th August. The High Tea is sold out, but books will be on sale at the Ekka in centre ring on Wed/Thu/Fri - 8/9/10th August. You can also buy a copy online at http://cattlemeninpearls.com .

A word about our creative team - we have five wonderful authors, all bush girls themselves. Annabelle Brayley, Paula Heelan, Tracey Hartmann (who is also the most wondrous project manager), Amanda Salisbury and Claire Mactaggart. The graphic design has been done by Elspeth Barker from PLASH CREATIVE in Roma, the cover has been painted by Sandra Allen, an artist of note also from Roma, and our editor is Bev Ryan from Bev Ryan Publishing Services in Brisbane. Each and every one of these people has done a fabulous job - hence our delight with the printed article.

NOW - none of this would have happened if the 28 women approached hadn't been so generous with their time and stories - we so appreciate how you have opened your hearts and made these stories so real and personal. All we can say is THANK YOU to everyone involved. To this list must be added David and Jane Thomas from the RNA who have encouraged us and helped us so much with the launch. SO much appreciated.
